Practice Chipping When It’s Raining
You can not always go outside to practice your game. The weather does not always cooperate for perfect golfing conditions. Occasionally it’s the rain other times it’s just too cold. If you live in a chillier climate you might go months without having the ability to make a trip out to a golf course. What do you do to keep your short game untouched? You practice chipping inside of course. There are a few things you are going to need if you are going to practice indoors.
Room
The 1st is lots of space. You want at least 10 feet of open space. The ceilings don’t need to be that high since you will not be taking the club back very far.
Mat
The second thing you need to have is a mat to chip off. You do not need to wear down your carpet so pick up a mat which has extremely short fiber so it simulates the closely mown grass found on the fringe.
Balls
I would not endorse chipping with real balls as you could put a hole in the wall. Instead go for softer practice balls or wiffle balls that you can find at almost any golf shop.
Target
You are going to want something to aim at. You obviously are not going to want to put a hole in your floor so if you need to simulate a cup then use a red solo cup or any other plastic cup. This implies that the target will be 2 inches off the ground, but use your mind because at least it’s the perfect size.
What I like to use as a target is a paper or tissue. Then, instead of attempting to get the ball to stop rolling on the target, I try and land the ball on the target. This helps me take my practice out to the course. The greens you play on aren’t going to be similar to your carpet when it comes to roll, but the distance your swing causes the ball to go in the air won’t be different.
